Phasmophobia is joining Xbox Play Anywhere as part of its Resonance update, which Kinetic Games plans to release in late November. If you already own it on Xbox, you’ll be able to play it on Windows PC as well as Xbox Series X|S.
Kinetic Games set out the plan in Phasmophobia Development Preview #22, which also covers the move to Unity 6, new equipment and a few things that won’t make it into Resonance. Phasmophobia has been on Xbox Series X|S in Game Preview since 29 October 2024.
Xbox Play Anywhere with Resonance
Play Anywhere support arrives with Resonance. Kinetic says Xbox owners will be able to play on any device that supports Xbox play, including PCs, laptops and handheld PCs, as well as Xbox Series X|S. There’s no exact date beyond late November. The preview also doesn’t say whether Resonance will reach Xbox on the same day as everyone else. New to Play Anywhere? Our Xbox Play Anywhere explainer covers how it works.
What else is in Resonance
Kinetic has combined its Unity 6 update and its next content update into one release. It adds:
- Dowsing Rods: new equipment for finding the Bone, mainly on bigger maps such as Brownstone High School. Tier 1 points you in the general direction, and Tier 3 gives a more accurate location, including the floor.
- A reworked Sound Sensor: its map now shows where sounds come from, with icons for looping and one-off sounds. It only picks up sounds on your floor, and how fast something moves on the map can help you work out the ghost type during a Hunt.
- More Voice Recognition: you’ll be able to ask the ghost to interact with doors and switches, throw objects or give a sign that it’s there. This also works in Text mode, and a new Journal page lists the phrases it understands.
- Custom map pools: pick as many maps as you like for a random rotation, with quick buttons for small, medium and large maps.
- A warning system: players who break the Code of Conduct can get a warning instead of an instant ban, unless the offence is severe. If you report someone and action is taken, you’ll be told.
Unity 6: fixes, performance and lighting
The engine move is aimed at stability and performance, including CPU, GPU, VRAM and RAM usage. It also brings memory leak fixes and what Kinetic calls “lots” of bug fixes, including for the most common crashes. Unity 6 also lets Kinetic improve the game’s lighting. Patch notes will follow when the update goes live.
Kinetic also lists new graphics and quality presets, an extreme shadow quality setting and eight colour-blindness options, from Protanopia to Achromatomaly. The preview doesn’t say which of these settings will be available on Xbox Series X|S.
Not in Resonance
The Player Character Visual Update has been taken out of Resonance and doesn’t have a date yet. It brings more than 30 new cosmetics with colour and texture variants, an improved Customisation Shop UI and updated character models. A reworked 42 Edgefield Road is due later this year, but Kinetic hasn’t said when. Phasmophobia 1.0 is planned for late 2027.
