What is Cluedo?
It’s the official digital version of the classic board game, licensed by Hasbro and known as Clue in the US. Three cards are hidden as the solution, everyone gets a hand of cards, and you move from room to room making suggestions about who killed Mr Boden “Boddy” Black, with what and where. Other players disprove you by showing a matching card, and when you think you know, you make an accusation. Get it wrong and you’re out.
Is it on Xbox?
Yes, on Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One, with Smart Delivery so one purchase covers both. It isn’t on Game Pass. The newest expansion, Painted Red Gallery, is out now on Xbox.
What modes are there?
Classic mode plays it the way you remember on the Tudor Mansion board, with suspects Miss Scarlett, Colonel Mustard, Professor Plum, Chef White, Solicitor Peacock and Mayor Green. Clue Cards mode is for quicker games, and Ultimate Detective mode, made for the digital version, has everyone answer your suggestion at the same time but in secret. You can play against AI opponents that adapt to your skill level, online against other players, in private online matches, or locally with friends and family.
What expansions are there?
Each expansion adds a new board with its own story, case file and themed cosmetics. So far on Xbox there’s the Black Adder Resort, Whispering Pines Retreat, Polar Research Station, Noir Mansion and Painted Red Gallery, each £6.49 ($7.99, or $7.79 for the Black Adder Resort). There are also three suspect packs, the 2016, Legacy and Sherlock packs, at £7.99 / $7.99 each, with the Sherlock pack bringing in Sherlock Holmes.
What’s new in Painted Red Gallery?
Boddy is found dead in his own art gallery an hour before its one-night public opening. The expansion has six new weapons, nine rooms, nine more case files and themed cosmetics, plus Double Reveal: in Standard mode, every suggestion you make gets two answers instead of one.
Which edition should you look at?
The Epic Crime Collection (£44.99 / $49.99) gives access to ten expansions, including the ones already out and the rest as they release. The Deluxe Edition (£49.99 / $54.99) adds that to the base game, and the Ultimate Edition (£54.99 / $59.99, currently £19.24 / $20.99 until 5 November) has the base game, the Epic Crime Collection and the Suspects Bundle.
