Your first big call of the season is an easy one this year: Football Manager 27 is free to play on PC and Mac from 29 October to 3 November. Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass members get the Launch Preview too, and can keep playing all the way to launch.

From 6pm GMT on 29 October, the Launch Preview can be downloaded and played for free on Steam, the Epic Games Store, the Microsoft Store, Xbox Game Pass and PC Game Pass. On Game Pass, it’s only for Ultimate and PC Game Pass subscribers. There’s no extra sign-up and all game modes are available.

Crucially, any career saves you start during this five-day window carry over to the paid Launch Preview and the full game, so there’s no need to start again.

The pre-purchase window for FM27 opens alongside the free period, with 10% off. Pre-purchase through a SEGA-approved digital retailer and your Launch Preview access continues from 6pm GMT on 3 November until the full launch on 10 November 2026. On Game Pass, you simply carry on through your subscription. FM27 is a day-one Game Pass release for Ultimate and PC Game Pass members, and Sports Interactive says FM27 Console on Xbox Series X|S also launches from 10 November with Game Pass.

Worth knowing: the Launch Preview replaces what used to be called Beta / Advanced Access, and SI says it is closer to the finished game than previous early builds. Some licensing is still being signed off, though, so a few club and player assets may be missing for now.

Why This Free Trial Screams Confidence After the FM25 Saga

A five-day free preview with no paywall or pre-order needed is a bold move, and it shows the studio is brimming with confidence after a turbulent couple of years.

To understand why this move is so striking, you have to look back at the absolute chaos of the Football Manager 25 release cycle:

  • The engine switch: FM25 was supposed to be a generational leap for the series, moving to the Unity engine with a total UI overhaul and the introduction of women’s football.
  • The delays and cuts: Originally due in November 2024, the game was delayed twice, eventually to March 2025. Along the way, international management was cut from the PC, console and Touch versions.
  • The nuclear option: In February 2025, just weeks before its rescheduled launch, Sports Interactive took the historic step of cancelling the game entirely. It was the first time in two decades that a season passed without a new Football Manager, and a massive blow to fan trust.
  • The reset: The Unity rebuild finally arrived as Football Manager 26 on 4 November 2025, the first Football Manager built on the new engine.

By putting FM27 directly into the hands of anyone with a PC or Mac for free before it launches, Sports Interactive is laying its cards on the table. It isn’t hiding behind cinematic trailers. It’s betting that the clearer interface, enhanced match engine and new Tactical Tweaks and Tactical Effectiveness tools are solid enough to speak for themselves. After the FM25 saga, it’s a sink-or-swim move that shows SI believes the wheels are firmly back on.
