What is Mimic?
Mimic is an online social-deduction horror game where you and your crew try to escape a failing starship while one of you is secretly a mimic, a malicious alien creature that can disguise itself as a fellow human survivor. Ryan Laley Games says it aims to capture the fear, vulnerability and atmosphere of single-player horror in a role-based multiplayer setting.
Who is making Mimic?
Ryan Laley Games is developing and self-publishing it. The studio was founded in 2023, and Ryan Laley is a game development educator known for his tutorials on YouTube and Twitch. He describes himself as Mimic’s solo developer.
Is Mimic coming to Xbox?
Yes. Mimic is coming to Xbox Series X|S in 2027. There’s no firmer date or launch window yet, and there’s no Xbox Store page or Xbox price so far. It hasn’t been announced for Game Pass, and Xbox Play Anywhere hasn’t been confirmed.
What’s the story?
You wake from cryo-sleep on the starship Icarus, which is on its way to the human colony of Eden, and find there’s been a quarantine breach. To stop the contamination spreading, the ship’s automated AI has locked down navigation and set a self-destruct course straight into a nearby star.
Codex logs scattered across every map fill in the wider story: the mega-corporation Trident, where the alien came from, and what happened to the Icarus crew.
How do the roles work?
Players get secret roles that decide how they win. The crew repairs the ship’s vital systems to build an escape route. The mimic hunts from the shadows while disguised as a crewmate, aiming to escape the Icarus undetected. The corporate agent works to make sure the mimic survives for further study.
There’s a third threat too. An NPC android roams the halls, hunting any organic life that could be the mimic in disguise.
What are the main features?
- No weapons: every player is vulnerable, so survival comes down to teamwork, quick thinking and knowing who not to trust.
- Accuse to Survive: at any time, you can vote to send the android after a specific player.
- Proximity chat: use in-game voice to coordinate, or to lie.
- Custom matches: public matchmaking has set rules, but private lobbies can use modifiers that change objectives, environmental hazards, enemy behaviour and gameplay rules.
- Interactive streaming: Twitch viewers can direct the android’s hunt.
- Become an Omen: when you die, you keep playing as an invisible, ghost-like Omen that can interact with and sabotage the environment.
What’s on the Early Access roadmap?
Ryan Laley Games plans to add new maps, player roles and progression, gameplay mechanics, narrative content and a single-player mode, along with changes based on player feedback. Ryan Laley’s launch post says three more maps are planned beyond the Icarus, plus new affixes and gameplay modifiers, and more secrets and lore about the ship and the corporation behind it.
No dates have been given for any of it. “I also want to be careful not to promise specific delivery dates for upcoming features,” Ryan Laley wrote. “As a solo developer, priorities can change, particularly when unexpected technical challenges arise or community feedback highlights something more important.”
