Destiny 2 Unvaulting Starts With Red War, Forsaken and the Menagerie, Bungie Confirms

Bungie's first Destiny 2 unvaulting pass returns four campaigns, their strikes and raids, and the Menagerie, with about a year of full production ahead.

Bungie has set out its first plans for unvaulting Destiny 2. The Red War, Forsaken, Curse of Osiris and Warmind campaigns are the first to return, along with their strikes, raids, Raid Lairs and the Menagerie, and full production is expected to take about 12 months once early work wraps up in roughly January or February.

The details come from Bungie’s Bungie Community Update for October 2026, a Q&A between Bungie’s dmg04 and Josh Deane, Bungie’s Head of Product. It’s a new kind of blog that Bungie will use for studio news when it has something meaningful to share, covering Destiny, Marathon or Bungie in general.

Why Bungie is starting with unvaulting

Deane said the vaulting of essential Destiny 2 content “fragmented our experience and broke faith with our community”, even if it was based on some real technical challenges. “I just don’t see how we could move forward with confidence without first repairing trust and making Destiny 2 ‘whole,'” he said.

What’s coming back first

The first unvaulting pass will be available to all players and focuses on making the campaign slate whole again:

  • The Red War, Forsaken, Curse of Osiris and Warmind campaigns
  • Strikes from those releases
  • Raids and Raid Lairs from those releases
  • The Menagerie activity, with reprised rewards

Stretch goals and what isn’t planned

Bungie is also looking at a set of stretch goals that could arrive when unvaulting launches or afterwards, and says it’ll share more about them as unvaulting gets closer:

  • Free-roam destinations, including public events, Lost Sectors and Escalation Protocol
  • Seasonal activities from Sundial (Season 9) to The Coil (Season 23)
  • Raid and Raid Lair weapon updates
  • PvP maps

Some content currently has no path back, for technical or strategic reasons. Bungie says bringing these back could come at a cost to what it wants to build in the future: an updated New Light experience, seasonal story missions, the Gambit map Kell’s Grave, and seasonal hubs such as the Eliksni Quarter.

The timeline so far

Bungie got its initial greenlight to scope the work in June and validated its assumptions in September. It’s now in a pre-production, proof-of-work stage to make sure the process hits its quality bar as legacy content is ported. That stage should last until roughly January or February, followed by about 12 months of full production to finish porting. “It’s a lot of content,” Deane said.

More Destiny plans, but not at The Game Awards

Beyond unvaulting, Bungie listed three Destiny projects it calls “anchors”. A Destiny 2 ‘Celebration’ would add new updates for players beyond Monument of Triumph, and a Destiny ‘Legacy’ project aims to bring the whole Destiny journey to where players play today. Both should get progress bars in February. A third project is simply listed as [REDACTED].

Deane also said not to expect a Destiny announcement at The Game Awards this year. Bungie is targeting February for its next major Destiny comms update and will share unvaulting progress along the way.

Marathon: Symbiosis in December

For Marathon, Bungie is preparing the Symbiosis update for launch in December, followed by a March update. The next Marathon Dev Insight is due in early December, and the team is playtesting an upcoming experimental PvP mode.
