Destiny 2 is Bungie’s sci-fi shooter, and it’s free to play on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. Bungie is now working to bring back vaulted content and has outlined new Destiny projects. Here’s everything we know, and we’ll update this page as Bungie shares more.

Destiny 2 at a glance

  • Release date on Xbox: 6 September 2017
  • Platforms: Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S
  • Price: free to play
  • Game Pass: no
  • Xbox Play Anywhere: no
  • Unvaulting: full production expected to take about 12 months after early work ends around January or February
  • Next major Destiny update from Bungie: targeted for February
  • Developer and publisher: Bungie
  • Store: Microsoft Store

What is Destiny 2?

You play as a Guardian, a defender of humanity’s Last City, and choose between three classes: the armoured Titan, the mystic Warlock and the swift Hunter. You unlock elemental abilities, collect gear and play story missions, co-op activities and PvP modes, alone or with friends.

Is Destiny 2 getting more content?

Bungie announced that Destiny 2’s run of new content updates was ending, but in its Next Chapter for Bungie post on 17 September 2026, studio head Poria Torkan and Head of Product Josh Deane said “we are not done with Destiny”. The first step is bringing vaulted campaigns, destinations and raids back for all players. Bungie says that isn’t as simple as restoring old files, as lighting, encounters, combatants and other systems need updating to work with today’s game.

What content is being unvaulted?

Bungie detailed its plans in its October 2026 Bungie Community Update. Read our news story on the unvaulting plans for more. The first pass, available to all players, includes:

  • The Red War, Forsaken, Curse of Osiris and Warmind campaigns
  • Strikes, raids and Raid Lairs from those releases
  • The Menagerie, with reprised rewards

Stretch goals that could arrive at unvaulting launch or later are free-roam destinations (public events, Lost Sectors, Escalation Protocol), seasonal activities from Sundial (Season 9) to The Coil (Season 23), Raid and Raid Lair weapon updates, and PvP maps.

What isn’t coming back?

Bungie says these currently have no path back, for technical or strategic reasons: an updated New Light experience, seasonal story missions, the Gambit map Kell’s Grave, and seasonal hubs such as the Eliksni Quarter.

When will unvaulted content arrive?

There’s no release date yet. Bungie got an initial greenlight in June, validated the plan in September and is now in pre-production, proving the porting process works. That stage should run until roughly January or February, followed by about 12 months of full production.

What else is planned for Destiny?

  • Destiny 2 ‘Celebration’: new updates in Destiny 2 to celebrate with the community, with a progress bar expected in February.
  • Destiny ‘Legacy’: a project to bring the whole Destiny journey to where players play today, also with a progress bar expected in February.
  • [REDACTED]: a third project, with no details yet.

Bungie says not to expect a Destiny announcement at The Game Awards this year. Its next major Destiny comms update is targeted for February.
