What is Assassin’s Creed?

Set mainly in the Holy Land in 1191, during the Third Crusade, the game follows Altaïr Ibn-La’Ahad, an Assassin who is stripped of his rank and must track down and eliminate nine targets to win back his honour. A modern-day framing story has Desmond Miles reliving Altaïr’s memories through a machine called the Animus, a device that runs through much of the series.

Play centres on combat, stealth and free-running across the cities of Masyaf, Jerusalem, Acre and Damascus. Blending into crowds to get close to a target is a core idea, and investigation work leads up to each assassination. Developed by Ubisoft Montreal, it launched on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on 13 November 2007 in North America and on 16 November 2007 in Europe.

How to play Assassin’s Creed on Xbox today

Assassin’s Creed is an Xbox 360 game that plays on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S through backward compatibility. It is not in Game Pass and cannot be streamed with Xbox Cloud Gaming. See our guide to every Assassin’s Creed game on Xbox and Game Pass for the full list.

Editions and remasters

Assassin’s Creed achievements

On Xbox, Assassin’s Creed has 44 achievements worth 1,000 Gamerscore. By our average across several achievement and trophy guides, it rates 4/10 for difficulty, and a completion takes roughly 20 to 30 hours.

Four achievements can be missed during the story, so check the list before finishing it. All achievements are offline.

Where it sits in the series

This is where it all begins.
