Waking up to find someone has boarded up your house from the inside is a rubbish start to anyone’s day. That’s the setup of The Transference, a first-person escape-room thriller from Spanish solo developer Kuraishisama, which is out now on Xbox Series X|S.

Publisher JanduSoft released it on Thursday 29 October with a new launch trailer. It’s £10.49 / $12.49 on the Microsoft Store, but there’s a launch discount bringing it down to £8.39 / $9.99 until 13 November.

Locked inside your own home

The Transference is set in northern Andalusia in the late 1990s. You play Marcos, who wakes up trapped in his own house with no idea how or why. The doors and windows have been boarded up from the inside, which means whoever sealed him in might still be there.

They are not alone, either. Sinister inhabitants roam parts of the house, so you’ll have to hide, run and pick your moment to keep exploring. Clues, documents, cassette tapes, objects and family memories gradually piece together a story of family secrets and betrayals, and the question of who locked you up and why.

Puzzles inspired by Spanish poetry and history

The puzzles lean heavily on Spanish culture. JanduSoft and the Microsoft Store listing say they draw on poems by Lorca and Antonio Machado, Spanish literature and folk tales, automatons such as those built by Leonardo Torres Quevedo, 1990s mystery radio and TV, and even the Enigma machine and its link to the Spanish Civil War. Others riff on the Tower of Hanoi, the dining philosophers problem and the card game Seven and a Half.

The whole story is fully voiced in English and Spanish.
