When does Metro 2039 come out?

Metro 2039 launches on 4 February 2027. In some territories, including Asia, Australia and New Zealand, it arrives on 5 February.

Which Xbox platforms is it on?

Metro 2039 is coming to Xbox Series X|S and Xbox PC. It’s an Xbox Play Anywhere game, so one digital purchase covers both. A 60fps Performance Mode with ray tracing will be available on Xbox Series X at launch. It’s the first Metro game built from the ground up for ray tracing, running on 4A Games’ own 4A Engine.

Story and setting

The year is 2039. For a quarter of a century, the last survivors of nuclear war have fought each other in the Metro tunnels beneath Moscow. Now they have been united under one leader: Hunter, a fanatical Spartan whose Novoreich regime rules through propaganda and fear, preparing for a new war for the surface against a dark and terrifying enemy.

You play the Stranger, a recluse living in the wilderness beyond the city and haunted by violent waking nightmares. When the ghosts of his past force him out of exile, he heads back into the ruins of Moscow and the Metro, the one place he swore he’d never return to. The Stranger is the series’ first fully voiced lead.

The story is co-written with Dmitry Glukhovsky, author of the Metro novels. After Metro Exodus expanded the series’ world, Metro 2039 returns to the tunnels of the Moscow Metro. 4A Games’ team is majority-based in Ukraine, and the studio reworked its planned story after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Gameplay

  • A single-player campaign mixing exploration, survival, combat and stealth
  • Deadly swamps, irradiated cityscapes and claustrophobic tunnels to explore
  • Survival systems: radiation, gear that wears down and electronics that need charging
  • A UV tool for finding secrets, and paths you can cut or blast open
  • Crafting with blueprints, a hand-made arsenal to customise and the new Shatun rifle
  • Information shown in the world rather than on a HUD: a watch shows your remaining filter time, the map is a physical folio, and you save by marking a logbook
  • Returning enemies include the Nosalis, along with bandits and Hunter’s forces

Editions and pre-order bonus

Metro 2039 is available to pre-order on the Xbox Store.

  • Standard Edition: £59.99 / $69.99
  • Deluxe Edition: £84.99 / $99.99. Includes the full game, a story expansion DLC, a digital art book and a digital soundtrack
  • Pre-order bonus: the Specialist Pack, with early unlocks for the Munitions, Chemtech and Equipment backpack upgrades
  • Loyalty discount: 10% off a Deluxe Edition pre-order if you’ve bought a qualifying digital Metro game
