Joe & Mac Retro Collection is out now on Xbox Series X|S, and Red Art Games has released a launch trailer to mark it. The compilation brings together three Data East platformers from the early ’90s, and it’s 10% off until 6 November.
It was one of the games we flagged in this week’s new Xbox games.
Price and launch discount
The collection normally costs £16.74 / $19.99. Until 6 November, it’s £15.06 / $17.99 on the Xbox Store.
Three games in one collection
Red Art Studios, Red Art Games’ internal studio, developed the collection. It includes all three Joe & Mac games released in the West between 1991 and 1995, part of the Tatakae Genshijin series in Japan:
- Joe & Mac: Caveman Ninja: a run-and-gun platformer where Joe and Mac battle through 12 levels with prehistoric tools and weapons.
- Congo’s Caper: a side-scrolling action platformer starring Congo, a half-human, half-monkey boy trying to rescue his girlfriend from a demon across 35 levels.
- Joe & Mac 2: Lost in the Tropics: adds a light role-playing side. You still fight cavemen and dinosaurs, but you can also court and marry a Stone Age girlfriend and even have a child.
Each game comes in both its Western version and its uncensored Japanese original.
What’s new
The collection adds a Boss Rush mode, save states, a rewind feature, an optional CRT filter and customisable aspect ratios. Joe & Mac 1 and 2 can be played in two-player co-op. There’s also a Virtual Unboxing Experience for the original boxes, manuals and cartridges, plus a music player with all three soundtracks.
