Call of Duty Passes $40 Billion in Lifetime Revenue, Says Xbox CEO Asha Sharma

Xbox CEO Asha Sharma says Call of Duty has now made $40 billion in lifetime revenue, three days after Modern Warfare 4 launched on Xbox.

Call of Duty has now made $40 billion in lifetime revenue. Xbox CEO Asha Sharma shared the figure on X this evening, three days after Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 launched.

“One of the most celebrated Call of Duty games in its 24-year history, and now $40B in lifetime franchise revenue,” Sharma wrote. “An incredible milestone. Congrats to the Activision team. And to the players, thank you for being with us.”

She doesn’t name the game in the text, but the image attached to her post is a Modern Warfare 4 accolades graphic, with the game’s logo and review scores including 100/100 from Windows Central and four stars from The Guardian. The official Call of Duty account reposted it shortly afterwards.

What the $40 billion covers

Sharma calls it “lifetime franchise revenue”, so this is the whole series across its 24 years, not Modern Warfare 4 on its own. Xbox and Activision haven’t given a breakdown, a Modern Warfare 4 sales figure or a player count alongside it, and so far there’s no separate Xbox Wire or Activision announcement of the number. The post is the announcement.

The last time Activision put a public figure on it was in 2022, when it said the series had passed $30 billion. That’s another $10 billion in about four years, which is a lot of Operator skins. Sharma has made the size of the series a talking point before, saying at Bloomberg Tech this year that Call of Duty is “now grossing in more revenue than [the] Marvel Cinematic Universe”.

Modern Warfare 4 isn’t on Game Pass yet

Modern Warfare 4 launched on 23 October on Xbox Series X|S and Xbox on PC, and Xbox Wire marked the worldwide launch that day. It’s a standalone release. Activision’s COD Intel post says you have to buy it to play now, and it won’t join Game Pass until Holiday 2027. Game Pass Ultimate members still have Black Ops 7, Black Ops 6 and Modern Warfare III.

On the Microsoft Store the Standard Edition is £69.99 / $69.99 and the Vault Edition is £99.99 / $99.99. Activision says it’s an Xbox Play Anywhere title, so buying it on Xbox Series X|S or Xbox on PC gets you both versions.

Everything else on the game is in one place on our Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 hub.
