Active Matter passes 500,000 sales, with Xbox its biggest audience

Gaijin's hardcore shooter Active Matter has sold over 500,000 copies, with Xbox its largest player base. First major update due later this year.

Gaijin Entertainment says hardcore shooter Active Matter has passed 500,000 copies sold worldwide, and that Xbox currently accounts for the largest share of its players.

The milestone was announced today in a press release via GamesPress. The 500,000 figure is a combined total across every version of the game since its 15 September launch, so it is not an Xbox-only number. What Gaijin does say is that Xbox players make up the biggest single group of the game’s player base right now.

So much for the idea that Xbox players don’t buy games. Apparently they do, as long as there’s loot to lose.

Steady sales rather than a launch spike

Gaijin co-founder Anton Yudintsev said the game had not followed the usual pattern for a premium release.

“Half a million copies is a very strong result for a hardcore game like ours. What is especially encouraging is that sales have remained remarkably steady since launch, without the sharp opening-week spike that is typical for many premium games. This kind of long-tail performance is much more characteristic of hardcore titles, which tend to grow through word of mouth and a committed community.”

He added that the studio is “looking forward to expanding the game with new content and features over the coming years.”

First major update due later this year

The next step is Active Matter’s first major post-release content update, which Gaijin says will arrive later this year. It will add:

  • New maps
  • New weapons
  • New monsters and bosses
  • Visual improvements to the game’s world

No release date has been given yet. Gaijin says more details will be shared on the official Active Matter website.

What is Active Matter?

Developed by Team Matter and published by Gaijin, Active Matter mixes realistic modern military combat with supernatural threats. Players head into quantum-unstable zones, alone or in squads of up to three, to fight rival operatives, creatures and the environment while hunting for loot. It supports PvE, PvPvE and PvP play, and the core risk is deciding how much gear you are willing to lose on each raid.

The Standard Edition costs £26.99 in the UK and $29.99 in the US on the Microsoft Store.
