GSC Game World has released Update 2.1 for S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl. It’s called The Zone Lookout, and it’s out now on Xbox Series X|S and PC. It adds two things players have been asking for: a setting for how far away A-Life NPCs show up, and paid fast travel with squad leaders.
Choose how far you can see
You can now set the A-Life NPC visualisation distance yourself. The new presets are under Settings > Game > Visualisation. GSC recommends the default preset as “the safest bet for a stable run through the Zone”. It warns that higher settings may hit performance and stability. There’s also a Dynamic preset, which scales the range automatically to what your console or PC can handle.
The bigger range mostly covers A-Life NPCs. GSC says quest and scripted NPCs are handled separately to keep the game stable. Which presets you get can also depend on your console or PC.
Long-range combat has been tuned to match. Depending on your preset, you’ll hear gunfights from much farther away, and weapon ballistics have been adjusted to suit. The patch notes say the binoculars can now identify targets at a longer range when you’re using a higher streaming distance.
Fast travel, for a price
Friendly and neutral squad leaders now appear on your compass. Talk to one and they’ll guide you to nearby places along their own route. There are catches. Only nearby locations you’ve already explored are on offer. Nobody will carry your gear, so you can’t be overloaded. And it isn’t free. The official S.T.A.L.K.E.R. account calls the price “mostly reasonable” and adds that “the Zone has no freebies”. In GSC’s words, “don’t expect a guy from Zalissya to take you all the way to Prypiat.”
Plus a stack of fixes
GSC says the update was planned around player feedback from social media, forums and reviews. It also brings a broad set of bug fixes. The patch notes list fixes for NPCs and mutants getting stuck mid-air, NPCs aiming in the wrong direction, excessive spawns at Rostok and Duga, and blurry textures on several scopes when aiming down sights. There’s also a fix for some of the DLC’s starting missions not starting. Anomalies have been reworked too, including visual improvements for the arch-anomaly at the Chornobyl NPP.
The full rundown is on GSC’s Update 2.1 news post, and the overview trailer is up on YouTube.
Is it on Game Pass?
Not any more. S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 left Game Pass on 15 November 2025, about a year after it launched there. It’s an Xbox Play Anywhere title, so buying it once covers both Xbox and PC. The standard edition is listed at £49.99 / $59.99 on the Microsoft Store.
