When did Escape the Backrooms come out on Xbox?

Escape the Backrooms launched on Xbox Series X|S on 28 May 2026. The Xbox version came with all the content released for the game since its early access debut in 2022, including the Winter Wanderer and Chinese New Year cosmetics.

Is Escape the Backrooms on Game Pass?

Yes. It joined Game Pass on its Xbox launch day and is included with Game Pass Ultimate, Premium and PC Game Pass. Paid cosmetic packs aren’t included. It’s also an Xbox Play Anywhere game, so one purchase covers Xbox and Xbox on PC.

How does it play?

It’s a co-op horror exploration game for one to four players, based on the Backrooms creepypasta. You explore more than 30 levels, from the yellow hallways of Level 0 and echoing pool rooms to hotels and birthday parties, looking for the exit on each one. Every member of your team has to reach the exit alive to escape, and teammates can no-clip into other parts of the map.

Each level has hostile entities with their own mechanics, and they track your every move. Proximity voice chat lets you talk to nearby teammates, but entities can hear you as well. Your sanity drops the longer you wander, so find exits fast or drink almond water to hold on.

Going back into the Backrooms uncovers secret levels and new endings, and Nightmare Mode makes a single death mean a full restart.

Updates and cosmetic packs

Lost & Found (29 October 2026)

The latest update adds two free wanderer skins, Lost in Transit and Entity 67. Alongside it, the Lost & Found Cosmetic Pack (£4.99 / $5.99) adds five more skins: Remodelling Co. Employee, The Actor, Party Crasher, Misprint and Black Knight. Read our full Lost & Found story.

What’s next?

Lost & Found is the first step in the game’s roadmap for the rest of 2026. New levels are planned, with details still to come.

Who makes Escape the Backrooms?

It’s developed by Fancy Games and Blackbird Interactive and published by Secret Mode, which also published Still Wakes the Deep and Star Wars: Galactic Racer on Xbox.

We’ll update this page as new levels and updates arrive. For all our coverage, head to the Escape the Backrooms hub.
