Final Fantasy XIV Online is out now on Xbox. Our latest news story is Final Fantasy XIV: Evercold Launches 23 February 2027 as Zephyr Joins the Job List.
What is Final Fantasy XIV Online?
It’s an online role-playing game set in an ever-changing Final Fantasy world. You create your own Warrior of Light, take up jobs from tanks and healers to damage dealers, and follow a story that began with A Realm Reborn and has continued through five expansions. You can party up with friends or play solo with NPC allies in the main story dungeons. Square Enix says it has passed 35 million registered accounts.
Who makes it?
Square Enix develops and publishes it. Naoki Yoshida is its producer and director.
When did it come out on Xbox, and on which consoles?
It’s on Xbox Series X|S only, and it’s Optimised for Xbox Series X|S. After an open beta, the full game launched on Xbox on 21 March 2024. You’ll find every edition on its Xbox game page.
Is it free to play?
You can start for free. The Free Trial covers A Realm Reborn through Shadowbringers, with no limit on playtime. Beyond that, you need to buy the game and pay a subscription. On Xbox, the Complete Edition includes every expansion up to Dawntrail plus 30 days of free play, and the Store says the full-game editions also need a Game Pass Essential, Premium or Ultimate plan.
Is it on Game Pass, cloud or Xbox Play Anywhere?
It isn’t in the Game Pass library, and it isn’t an Xbox Play Anywhere game. You can stream it, though: the Xbox Store lists it as cloud playable with Game Pass Essential, Premium or Ultimate.
What is Evercold, and when is it out?
Evercold is the sixth expansion. It launches on Tuesday 23 February 2027, and pre-orders open on Wednesday 4 November 2026 at 9:00am GMT. Pre-orders get early access, tentatively from Friday 19 February 2027 at 9:00am GMT, if you’ve registered Dawntrail and completed certain quests.
It takes the Warrior of Light to the icebound Realm of the Fourth, with areas aboard huge realmships and new cities Fargarth and Hjartadunur. The level cap rises to 110. According to the official Evercold site, it also brings:
- Two new jobs: bastion, a main tank with a greatshield called a skyltborg, and zephyr, a physical ranged DPS with a crossbow and an avian familiar, Nephele.
- Evolved Mode: a new combat mode built around each job’s identity, and the only way to play the new jobs. Reborn Mode keeps the current system.
- EVANGELION: Ghosts of Desire: a new alliance raid series.
- Beyond the Lifestream: a new eight-player raid series in crossover with the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy, with new art from Tetsuya Nomura.
- Fierce: a new eight-player raid difficulty between Normal and Savage.
- Also: Seasons for rewards and item level, expanded character creation, and housing, PvP and chocobo companion updates in later 8.x patches.
Some updates, including the new battle system, will reach players who don’t buy Evercold.
What do you need, and what are the pre-order bonuses?
You need the full game (not the Free Trial) and a subscription, and registering Evercold also gives you Endwalker and Dawntrail. Square Enix hasn’t announced prices, and Evercold wasn’t yet listed on the Xbox Store when we checked on 31 October 2026.
- Pre-order bonuses: early access, Halone’s Earring (an EXP boost for levels 1 to 100) and the Wind-Up Köttr minion. A Microsoft Store pre-order registers them automatically, with no code.
- Digital Collector’s Edition: adds the Valhallar Odin mount, the Entreat Crystal emote and the Crystal Skyltborg weapon, from early access.
- Collector’s Box: physical goods only, from the Square Enix Store, including an art box with Yoshitaka Amano art.
