Curse of Resthaven, a gothic narrative roguelite about saving an island colony stuck in an apocalyptic time loop, is out now on Xbox Series X|S for £16.74 / $19.99.

It’s the second game from Toronto’s Hilltop Studios, the team behind Lil’ Guardsman, and it’s published by Digital Bandidos. It launched on Thursday 29 October alongside a new launch trailer.

Six days to save Resthaven

You play Ambrose, the newly appointed governor of a struggling island colony, who has come looking for his missing niece, Amalia. Six days into the job, ancient forces rise up and wipe Resthaven out, and Ambrose wakes up back on the day he arrived as the only one who remembers what happened.

Each loop is a chance to use what you’ve learned to work out what doomed the island and stop the cataclysm. Every time the loop resets, the island’s fading goddess offers you one of three Boon Cards, each with its own upsides and downsides. There are three timelines to finish, and only by reaching all three endings do you unlock a fourth, true ending.

Trading, investigating and expeditions

Curse of Resthaven mixes several genres. In town, you trade and haggle with visiting merchants and use the gold to revive six upgradeable businesses, while questioning 25 fully voiced characters who all have secrets and agendas of their own. Beyond the walls, you head out on card-based expeditions, building a deck of resource and companion cards to face the horrors in the wilderness and expand the colony.

It was made by just five people, according to Digital Bandidos, two of whom handled all of the hand-drawn art. GameCoder Studios handled porting and QA.

“It’s an unusual, weird mix of genres, and I’m thrilled it’s come together even better than I envisioned it,” said game director Scott Christian. “The game was made by five people, and after the run-up to launch, I can safely say we’re five very proud, very exhausted, slightly delirious people.”
