The Elder Scrolls VI is the next main game in Bethesda Game Studios’ fantasy role-playing series. Bethesda has confirmed very little since revealing it, so this guide separates what’s official from what’s been reported. We’ll update it as Bethesda shares more.

Confirmed vs reported at a glance

  • Confirmed: the game exists and is officially called The Elder Scrolls VI. Bethesda Game Studios is developing it on Creation Engine 3, and it’s the studio’s main focus.
  • Reported, not confirmed: the full name The Elder Scrolls VI: Sentinel, a Hammerfell setting, a name reveal as soon as November, and a live playthrough for Xbox CEO Asha Sharma in August.
  • Not announced: release date, platforms, price and gameplay footage.

The announcement

Bethesda announced The Elder Scrolls VI at its E3 2018 showcase with a teaser of just over 30 seconds. It shows a sweeping coastal landscape before the title appears, with no gameplay, setting or release window.

The name

Confirmed: the only official name is The Elder Scrolls VI.

Reported: on 29 October 2026, Tom Warren of The Verge reported, citing sources familiar with Bethesda’s plans, that the game will officially be called The Elder Scrolls VI: Sentinel. We’ve covered the report in full in our news story.

The setting (light spoilers)

Light spoiler warning: this section covers the game’s reported setting and story theme.

Confirmed: Bethesda hasn’t revealed where the game is set.

Reported: The Verge says Sentinel will be set in Hammerfell, a province that has appeared in The Elder Scrolls Adventures: Redguard and The Elder Scrolls Online. Warren also reports it will be the first game about the history of the Elder Scrolls themselves, helping uncover the secrets of the series’ mysterious ancient artifacts.

Development status and official statements

In a note from Bethesda Game Studios published in July 2026, the studio said: “Our teams are now developing The Elder Scrolls VI and Fallout 5 on Creation Engine 3.” It added that The Elder Scrolls VI “is our primary development focus today, with the majority of our team currently working on the next chapter of the franchise,” and: “We’re where we planned to be, loving how it looks, and playing it every day.”

Todd Howard, Bethesda Game Studios’ director and executive producer, told Game Informer in December 2025: “It’s progressing really well. The majority of the studio’s on VI.”

The August playthrough

Reported: The Verge says Bethesda has been showing Sentinel gameplay in recent months. Xbox CEO Asha Sharma reportedly saw a live playthrough in August, praised the game’s scale and said “the story is even greater.” Neither Bethesda nor Xbox has commented.

When could it be revealed?

Reported: Warren says the name announcement could come as soon as November 2026, around the 15th anniversary of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, which launched on 11 November 2011. He expects only a name reveal, with nothing more about the game. No release date or window has been announced.

Platforms

Confirmed: no platforms have been officially announced. When Windows Central asked Todd Howard about platform plans in July 2026, he said it was too early to comment. A Microsoft document from the 2023 FTC case, reported by The Verge, listed the game for Xbox with a release expected in 2026 or later. That was a planning document rather than an announcement.
