Fable: Everything We Know

Fable, Playground Games’ open-world action RPG reboot, launches on Xbox Series X|S and Xbox on PC on 23 February 2027, and it’s coming to Game Pass on day one. Here’s everything we know about the release date, editions, Game Pass, Albion and its Heroes.

What is Fable?

It’s a reboot of the Fable series from Playground Games. You play the first Hero in a generation, exploring a living Albion full of peculiar characters, dark humour and a lot of chickens. Every choice shapes your journey, your reputation is everything, and fairytale endings are not guaranteed.

When does Fable come out?

23 February 2027. The Premium Edition comes with Early Access from 18 February, up to five days before launch.

Is Fable on Game Pass?

Yes. It’s coming to Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass on day one, and it’s on our list of every game coming to Game Pass. Game Pass members can buy the Premium Edition Upgrade (£39.99 / $39.99) to get the Premium extras, including Early Access.

Which Xbox platforms is it on?

Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC and the cloud. It’s an Xbox Play Anywhere game, so one purchase covers console and PC.

What editions are there?

The Standard Edition is £59.99 / $69.99. The Premium Edition, £89.99 / $99.99, adds Early Access, the Premium Edition Content Pack (the Splendid Armour and Bastard Armour sets, plus three each of Queen’s Bouquets, Bags of Offal and Decadent Gold Leaf Bread to give as gifts), a digital artbook and soundtrack, and the Fable: Order of the Hero expansion when it arrives after launch. The soundtrack is composed by Jacob Shea.

There’s also a Collector’s Edition with everything in the Premium Edition, plus a limited-edition Jack of Blades statuette, a hardcover art book, a SteelBook case and a Guild Seal lapel pin.

Is there a pre-order bonus?

Yes. Pre-order any edition before launch to get the Pre-Order Content Pack: the Chicken Suit plus a Wild Flower Bouquet, a Toy Chicken and a Scones & Jam Picnic Hamper to give as gifts.

What do you do in Fable?

You customise your Hero and mix melee, ranged and magical combat against bandits, beasts and creatures, including new enemies and returning Hobbes, Balverines and Trolls. Your power grows with your reputation.

Away from fighting, you can get rich as a landlord or blacksmith, romance villagers, have kids, and watch your reputation precede you. Your deeds change how each villager sees you and can shape the world around you. You can go inside every building and buy every house. Demon Doors are back too, and behind one of them is a chicken-kicking minigame.

Who’s in it?

Isabel, the Hero of Wraithmarsh, is played by Hayley Atwell. She’s a Hero haunted by a troubled past who believes Albion doesn’t need Heroes, just her. The Jack of Blades also appears. In Bowerstone you’ll meet Humphry the Golden, the disgraced Guildmaster of the Heroes’ Guild.

Where is it set?

Albion. Two regions have had official guides so far. Bowerstone is the capital, the oldest city in Albion, with Bowerstone Castle, the Heroes’ Guild and districts such as Bowerminster and Copperbottom. Wraithmarsh is a flooded region in the North, once the farmland of Bloodmoor until the Sea Wall collapsed, and home to the town of Sodden Dorrit.

Is there an expansion?

Yes. Fable: Order of the Hero is a story expansion coming after launch, set in a new region. You rise to lead a dark, ancient cult and shape it however you like, which raises the question of what happened to its last leader. It’s included in the Premium Edition.

What trailers and gameplay have been shown?

A new trailer at the Xbox Showcase in June 2026 introduced Isabel and gave a first glimpse of the Jack of Blades. At gamescom 2026, Playground Games showed new quest gameplay set in Bowerstone, featuring Humphry, choices and consequences, and combat.
