Xbox Review Kingdom Rush – To Battle!

Kingdom Rush, the popular tower defense game, has recently launched on Xbox consoles. The game features challenging gameplay and colorful graphics, as players strategize to place towers and defeat waves of enemies. But how does it play on a controller?

As a long-time fan of the Kingdom Rush franchise, I was excited to dive into the latest iteration of the game on Xbox. I have completed all previous versions of the game across mobile, PC, and Switch, so I had high expectations for this one. I was not disappointed. Kingdom Rush on Xbox exceeded my expectations and provided a fresh and unique experience thanks to the ability to play primarily with a controller.

Kingdom Rush is a tower defense game where players must strategically place towers along a path to defend against waves of enemies. The game features a variety of levels and difficulty levels, as well as different types of towers and enemies to defeat. The goal is to prevent enemies from reaching the end of the path and protecting the kingdom. The game features colorful graphics and 70 achievements to unlock. You should be able to get most of these by just completing the game.

The story of Kingdom Rush is that it takes place in a fantasy medieval kingdom called Linirea. The kingdom is threatened by an invasion of orcs, goblins, and other fantasy creatures. The player takes on the role of the kingdom’s commander and must defend the kingdom by strategically placing towers along a path to stop the waves of enemies. The game features various levels, each with its own unique enemies and challenges. As the player progresses through the levels, they encounter powerful bosses and unlock new towers and upgrades to help them in their defense. The ultimate goal is to protect the kingdom and its citizens from invading forces.

Enemies

The game features a wide variety of enemies, each with its own unique abilities and characteristics. The game’s enemies are divided into several categories such as orcs, goblins, and other fantasy creatures. Each category has different types of enemies that have different health points, speed, and attack patterns.

For example, the goblin enemy is weak but fast, while the orc is stronger but slower. The game also features giant enemies that have high health points and can deal significant damage to towers. Some enemies can fly, which makes them immune to ground-based towers, while others can burrow underground, which makes them immune to surface-based towers.

Towers

Defending the kingdom in Kingdom Rush is a challenging and engaging task, players can stop the forces by using a variety of different tower types. Each tower type has its own unique abilities and characteristics that make it effective against different types of enemies. For example, the Archer Tower is a basic tower that is great for taking out fast and weak enemies, while the Mage Tower is effective against large groups of enemies and deals extra damage to bosses. The Barracks tower creates soldiers to fight alongside the player and the Bomb tower creates area damage.

Players can also upgrade their towers to make them even more powerful and effective. For example, the Archer Tower can be upgraded to a Ranger Tower, which has a longer range and deals more damage. The Mage Tower can be upgraded to a Sorcerer Tower, which can slow down enemies and deal even more damage. Players must choose the right tower types and upgrades to effectively defend against the waves of enemies and protect the kingdom.

The variety of levels and enemies in Kingdom Rush adds to the game’s replayability and challenge. Each level has its own unique layout, enemies, and challenges. This means that the player must adapt their strategy and tower placement for each level. What works on one level may not work on another level, forcing players to think critically and experiment with different combinations of towers and upgrades.

For example, a level that has a narrow path may require players to focus on towers that can attack enemies from a distance, while a level with a wide open area may require players to use area-of-effect towers to take out large groups of enemies. The game’s various levels and enemies also mean that players will encounter new challenges and obstacles as they progress through the game, keeping it fresh and engaging. The game also features different difficulty levels, so players can choose to play a level that is challenging but not impossible to complete.

Bosses

In addition to the standard waves of enemies, Kingdom Rush also features boss battles at the end of each stage. These boss battles add an extra level of challenge and excitement to the game as players must come up with new strategies to defeat them.

What players may discover is that the strategy that works to complete the first part of the battle easily may be completely ineffective against the boss. This is because bosses have unique abilities and characteristics that require a different approach to defeat them. The boss battles in Kingdom Rush are well-designed, challenging, and rewarding. They are a great addition to the game, providing a sense of accomplishment to players who can defeat them.

Kingdom Rush also features Heroic and Iron challenges, which add an extra level of challenge and replayability to the game. Heroic challenges are special levels that are unlocked after completing the stage. These levels are even more difficult than the regular levels and require players to use all of their skills and strategies to complete them. They offer a greater challenge as the player is not allowed to use hero units. This means that players must rely solely on towers to defend the kingdom.

Challenges

Iron challenges are special versions of the regular levels that have a twist: the number of towers you can use is reduced. For example, you will only be allowed to use the bomb tower along with the barracks. These challenges provide an extra level of challenge, as players must strategize and experiment with different tower combinations and upgrades to find the most effective way to defend against the waves of enemies without the help of hero units.

Hero units are special characters that the player can deploy to defend the kingdom. They are powerful units that have unique abilities and characteristics that make them effective against different types of enemies. The player can deploy them anywhere on the map and they will automatically attack enemies that come within range.

The player can unlock new hero units by completing certain levels. Each hero unit has its own unique abilities and characteristics, such as increased attack speed, longer range, or the ability to slow down enemies. The player can also upgrade hero units to make them even more powerful. They can be deployed anywhere on the map and can be used to defend specific areas or to attack specific types of enemies. They provide an extra level of control and versatility to the player, allowing them to adapt to different situations and challenges.

Controller

The controller implementation in Kingdom Rush is generally good, but it can take some getting used to for players who have played the game on other platforms. One of the challenges of playing with a controller is that it can be harder to quickly place towers as it takes longer to navigate the menus and select the desired tower. This can make it more challenging to keep up with the fast-paced gameplay and defend against the waves of enemies.

One feature that would be helpful in this situation is the ability to pause or slow down the game. This would allow players to take the time they need to place towers and strategize without feeling rushed. However, this feature is not currently available in the game.

Score and summary

Kingdom Rush on Xbox is a great addition to the beloved franchise. As a fan, I have to say that I am a little biased, but I still believe that the game is fantastic. The controller implementation could be tweaked a bit, but overall it provides a fresh and unique experience. The lack of a pause or slow-down feature makes it harder to place towers quickly.

When asked about my favorite tower defense game, I always say the Kingdom Rush series, and this latest version on Xbox continues to solidify that for me. The game is challenging and engaging, with a wide variety of levels and difficulty levels, as well as different types of towers and enemies to defeat. The graphics are bright and colorful, and the sound effects and music are well done.

If you’re looking to try a tower defense game, the barrier to entry to Kingdom Rush is low and it is a lot of fun. The achievements implementation is great as well. Overall, Kingdom Rush on Xbox is a highly recommended game for fans of tower defense games and a great addition to the Xbox library and I hope they bring the rest of the series over.

Rating: 4.5 out of 5.
