We already knew Avowed was set to launch on February 18, 2025, but new details have dropped, giving us plenty to chew on as we wait to dive into Obsidian’s next big RPG. First, let’s talk about that release date. In a recent Game File interview, Xbox chief Phil Spencer set the record straight:
“We didn’t move it because Obsidian needed the time. They’ll use the time. Matt Booty and I, we plan it out, we talk with the Game Pass team. We said, ‘Okay, let’s make sure we pace this out a little better.’”
Translation? Obsidian’s Avowed is ready to roll, but Xbox opted to sidestep Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 and Stalker 2, both threatening to hog the spotlight in late 2024. Instead, they’re betting February will give the Living Lands room to breathe—though that’s looking less certain by the day. With Civilization 7, Kingdom Come 2, Assassin’s Creed: Shadows, Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth – Pirate Edition, and Monster Hunter Wilds all elbowing for attention, Avowed may find itself in the middle of a crowded release window.
Its saving grace? Game Pass. Launching day one on the subscription service ensures that Avowed will land in front of millions of players instantly, giving it a much-needed leg up in a competitive month.
What We Know About Avowed
Now for the exciting stuff. Set in the Living Lands—a previously unseen region of the Pillars of Eternity universe—you’ll play as an envoy navigating a world packed with secrets, political intrigue, and tough choices that ripple across the land. Add companions into the mix (four of them, each with unique personalities and stories), and you’ve got an RPG primed to give you all the narrative depth and moral dilemmas Obsidian fans crave.
Early Access and Editions
Not feeling patient? Pre-order the Premium Edition, and you’ll get up to five days of early access starting February 13. The Premium Edition also packs two cosmetic skin sets (Eora Collection and Obsidian Collection), a digital artbook, and the Avowed soundtrack by Venus Theory. If you’re a physical collector, the SteelBook Edition includes all of the Premium digital goodies plus a map of the Living Lands.
And for Game Pass Ultimate or PC Game Pass members, Avowed will be available on day one. You’ll even have the option to play via Battle.net by linking your accounts.
Customization and Accessibility
Avowed goes all-in on personalization. Whether you’re customizing your field of view, adjusting subtitles for readability, or remapping every control to your liking, the game is packed with accessibility features to suit your needs. A third-person mode is also available, offering a different perspective on Eora’s vibrant environments and intense battles.
With localization in 12 languages, Avowed makes sure fans worldwide can experience the Living Lands in a way that feels natural. Add in SSD optimization and top-tier visuals, and it’s clear Obsidian is focused on delivering a polished experience.
