Activision / Microsoft Merger – CMA Report Delayed to 26 April

The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) in the UK has announced that it will be extending its investigation into the proposed acquisition of Activision Blizzard by Microsoft. The original deadline for the investigation was set to expire on March 1st, 2023, but has now been extended by eight weeks to April 26th, 2023. The CMA stated that the extension is necessary due to the complexity and scope of the investigation, as well as the need to consider a large volume of evidence and main party and third party submissions. The CMA aims to complete the inquiry as soon as possible, but has allowed for the extended timeframe to ensure that a fully reasoned final decision can be reached within the statutory timeframe.

The Inquiry Group has decided that the reference period should be extended
by eight weeks under section 39(3) of the Act as it considers there are special
reasons (set out below) why the final report cannot be prepared and published
within the reference period. The revised reference period will expire on 26
April 2023. However, the Group aims to complete the inquiry as soon as
possible and in advance of this date.
